Maasikam Homam

Maasikams are periodical offerings of food and drink to the departed soul during its first day in the other world. In the pitru loka (world of ancestors), one day is considered as long as one earth year.

We perform 12 maasikams, making it a two-hourly offering of food and drink in the timeline of the other world. The belief is that the soul takes time to get rid of its earthly habits and feels hunger and thirst very often during this "first day".

Timing: Performed on the same Tithi and Paksha every month until the first-year anniversary.

Sodakumbham (short for "Sodakakumbham") is a crucial ritual based on the belief that the departed soul will be examined by a panel of superhuman entities to judge its eligibility for admission into the Pitruloka. This occurs at the time of the Sapindeekaranam during the Aabdeekam.

By performing Sodakumbham, we appeal to these divine judges to recognize that the descendants (son/family) are sincere "Sraddhaalus." We pray for the departed soul's admission to Pitruloka, notwithstanding any shortcomings the person may have had during their lifetime.

"Oonam" is short for 'Oona Maasikam'. It is a method by which any defects in performing the regular Maasikams are atoned. These are performed at specific intervals calculated from the day of cremation.
